SHS Band ProgramS

The Sanderson Band has a long history of excellence, dating back to the school's opening in 1968. Currently, the Sanderson Band program consists of the Marching Spartans, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and various other small ensembles, as well as annual performances with the Sanderson Theater Department in the spring musical. The band has performed extensively across North Carolina and the Southeastern United States in both marching band competitions and concert band festivals. Each year many Sanderson Band students are selected for All-District, All-State, and Governor's School, and many alumni are pursuing music degrees at some of the country's finest universities.

Band Classes

Wind Ensemble

Sanderson’s Wind Ensemble is an audition only class, featuring selected instrumentalists. As a serious music student, you will explore the art of music, from the classical "standards" to pieces by contemporary composers, and you will learn advanced techniques and musical concepts. The Wind Ensemble usually attends at least one judged festival during the year and is the featured performance group at many school functions.

Concert Band

The Concert Band is for students with general musical experience and studies lighter selections. You will advance in individual technique and grow in musical experience in preparation for more in depth study.

Percussion Ensemble

The Percussion Ensemble Class is during the fall semester and is designed to give percussion students a setting to enhance their percussion skills. Emphasis is placed on fundamentals of snare drum and keyboard percussion. The class also prepares several pieces that are performed at two concerts during the fall semester. All percussion students are expected to provide their own sticks and mallets for the instruments that are being studied.

Extra-Curricular

Marching Band

Marching Band is a unique group of high school musicians and Color Guard dedicated to hard work, excellence and the performance of the best musical and visual half-time and parade show possible. The Marching Band merges music with movement and visual effect on the football fields each fall in shows and competitions. In May, you will get music to practice for the next season. In July, you attend Band Camp to learn the show, giving you a chance to meet new friends before school starts in the fall. Learning the music and field routines is hard work, but the band always makes time for fun. During the season the Marching Band performs at home football games, pep rallies, competitions and parades.

Percussion ensemble

The Percussion Ensemble group consists of a large competitive concert percussion ensemble made up of keyboards, drums and sound effects. The Percussion Ensemble season runs from December through late March and/or continues into May. Each year the ensemble is comprised of both percussionists and non-percussionists who perform an original show in local competitions in addition to the Atlantic Indoor Championships.

Winter Guard

The Winter Guard is an indoor color guard performing art. Unlike traditional color guard, Winter Guard performs indoors in a gym. Performances make use of recorded music rather than a live band. The Sanderson Winter Guard season is from December to late March each year. Each season is comprised of performing an original show using flags, rifles and dance. They perform for multiple competitions each year and the Atlantic Indoor Championships.

Spring Musical

The SHS Theater Department’s Spring Musical is performed in April. Band members interested in playing in the pit will start after school rehearsals around early February.
